SAN FRANCISCO — A person close to the case says a federal judge has overturned California’s same-sex marriage ban in a landmark case that could eventually land before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker made his ruling Wednesday in a lawsuit filed by two gay couples who claimed the voter-approved ban violated their civil rights.

A copy of the ruling had not yet been publicly released.

Both sides previously said an appeal was certain if Walker did not rule in their favor. The case would go first to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals then the Supreme Court if the high court justices agree to review it.

We have been hard at work and are finally ready to show all of you our new Discussion section! The discussion section will consists of interviews from friends and awesome activists, vegan / AR musicians, interesting lectures, etc. We are really excited to finally have this happen after working on it for a long time.

TOWN OF WALLKILL — Once destined for lab tests in New Jersey, 90 beagles left small cages and stepped onto grass for the first time Friday at the Pets Alive no-kill animal shelter. The dogs were among 120 taken from the Aniclin Preclinical Services in Warren County, N.J, after Aniclin’s parent pharmaceutical company couldn’t pay its bills.

A New Jersey-based animal rights organization called Win Animal Rights had fought for control of the 175 Aniclin animals — including 55 primates — and coordinated their release to animal rescue agencies Friday
