RABBIT FARM RAIDED AND EXPOSED. UK

“Animal Liberation Front Investigations Unit Expose Rabbit Meat Farm
05 . 11 . 2008

On the eve of Barry Horne’s death, a group of volunteers accessed a rabbit ‘meat’ farm in Berkshire, U.K. This farm used to harbour hundreds of rabbits in the back of converted box lorries, but have recently upgraded their bunny butchering enterprise to four permanent and highly intensive units. Semi-built and set to be filled with hundreds of rabbits, we entered the site and bypassed top security measures.. the key was left in the door!

One unit was so full of rubble and electricity cables we almost didn’t expect to find any animals in such conditions. Further inspection found rows of cages, many with rabbits inside. All living on wire, many rabbits were blind, had ears missing and were rotting alive inside this windowless hell.

Even within a legal system that legitimises animal abuse, this sicko has still managed to torture animals beyond any legal requirements. The unit was in total disrepair, flooded with a mix of water and excrement, with open elecrticity wires and strewn with litter. None of the units had ventilation or air conditioning systems, despite being newly built. This farm was an excellent example of what ‘animal welfare’ means for animals: fuck all.

Needless to say we decided to make some legal corrections. After taking several rabbits to safety, who are now recovering in loving homes, we turned our attention to stopping this ‘man’ filling any more cages with defenceless animals. We cut every empty cage into pieces. Fuse boxes and machinery were glued and filled with expanding foam. Messages were left on the outer walls and doors before we vanished back into the darkness with our newly acquired friends.

This action was carried out in the memory of Barry, who continues to be an inspiration to us all despite his death at the hands of the british government.

PdxL Let Live Activism Series #2: Skin Trade

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Reminding and announcing:

Let Live Activism Series #2:
Skin Trade with Shannon Keith
When: 11/23, 1 pm
Where: PSU, Smith Memorial Union, Room 238

With colder weather comes fur season. It starts appearing on racks in stores and on peoples backs around town. Most people don’t know what cruelty goes into their clothes as even fakes are often real dog and cat fur. With this in mind, and with the annual Fur Free Friday demonstrations coming up fast, we welcome acclaimed activist and director Shannon Keith who will be sharing segments of her new film Skin Trade, which is in production. Shannon is an animal and civil rights attorney, and the director of the award winning film, Behind the Mask. She is a regular speaker at animal rights conferences around the country and will be discussing the fur industry, her film, and leading a discussion about what we can all do to combat this cruel fashion. This discussion will cover audience member questions as well as how to combat industry arguments, outreach and education tips, and online activism options, amongst other topics.

Pretty please show up and learn a bit and make Shannon feel welcome.

Then, on (Fur Free) Friday….

From IDA:
“Join us for a peaceful, police-escorted march through the streets of downtown Portland to educate shoppers about the cruelty behind the fur trade. We will stop in front of the downtown stores that sell fur.

Friday, November 28th
11:00 am – 1:00 pm
Gather at the corner of SW Yamhill and SW Broadway in front of Nordstrom downtown Portland, Oregon.

For more information call 503-249-9996 x3.”

Yay! Portlanders will show up to these events in record numbers! No need for free snacks or gimics! Just showing up to learn and try a little bit to make the world a better place for all involved!

xoxo

When: Doors Open 7pm / Movie Starts 7:30pm

About A Sealed Fate: A film by Nigel Barker—professional photographer and a judge on “America’s Next Top Model” and one of The HSUS’s top spokespersonsthat chronicles Nigel’s two trips to Atlantic Canada this year with his team and with HSUS staff—the first before the hunt started where he showed the world through his pictures this open-air nursery and the majesty of the seals and the seascape, and the second to broadcast images of the hunt itself. The biopic subtly conveys how this slaughter of a quarter of a million or more seals really exists because of stubbornness and inertia, not because of its contribution to the economy and certainly not its role in managing marine mammal or fish populations. It’s just animal abuse, bound up with tradition, and it will only end when Canada, Americans, and Europeans make enough of a clamor and exert enough influence to shut it down.

About Portland Animal Defense League: The Portland Animal Defense League is an animal rights group based in Portland, Oregon. We are a grassroots organization that conducts hard-hitting campaigns designed to eliminate all forms of animal exploitation. We advocate veganism: an end to animals as food, entertainment and clothing, and ending animal testing in favor of modernized, ethical methods of research.

Facts:

  • More than one million baby seals have been killed in the past four years for their fur.
  • Baby seals can be hunted once their white coat is shed, which can be as early as 12 days.

Canadian Mink liberation. 3000 mink!

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

According to media reports, early on October 16 approximately 3000 mink were released from La Visonnière Labonté de Thetford Mines, the largest fur farm in Quebec.

Farm director Pierre Labonté told a local newspaper, “Not only did they open the cages and release mink, but they also destroyed their pedigree cards, which is the trademark of anti-fur militants.” (The cards contain irreplacable information about an individual animal’s life history.) With the loss of genetic information, Mr. Labonté said the escaped mink are no longer useful for breeding. “We have insurance that protects us against theft, but not against this type of crime,” he addded and estimated losses at $200,000.
