CAMPAIGN AGAINST ANIMAL CRUELTY CONTINUES DESPITE GOVERNMENT REPRESSION
Is Recent Jailing of Anti-HLS Activists a Call to Action?
With the recent sentencing of seven activists to long prison terms in the UK for protesting animal torture at notorious contract-testing laboratory Huntingdon Life Sciences, authorities and the animal abusers they protect have drawn a line in the sand. Those who advocate effectively for animals must now either scurry for cover, or rise up stronger to finally abolish the exploitation, oppression, torture and killing of innocent non-human animals for greed, convenience and pleasure.

On January 21, 2009, British courts sentenced seven animal rights activists to prison terms ranging from 4 to 11 years; the sentences totaled an astounding 50 years. The seven activists were members of the group Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, better known as SHAC, whose mission is to lead the global campaign to stop the killing of animals by Huntingdon Life Sciences. Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) is a contract research organization based in the United States, after fleeing from England as a result of the activist campaign there that exposed the cruelty and animal abuse taking place at HLS. They kill roughly 500 animals daily testing household products like oven cleaner, as well as pharmaceuticals for companies as big as Glaxo and Novartis.

The activists sentenced are: Heather Nicholson – 11 years, Gregg Avery – 9 years, Natasha Avery – 9 years, Gavin Medd-Hall – 8 years, Daniel Wadham – 5 years, Daniel Amos – 4 years and Gerrah Selby – 3 years. Justice Butterfield, who branded the activists “urban terrorists”, handed down the sentences after convictions of “conspiracy to blackmail”, a charge that requires a low threshold of proof. None of the activists was accused of harming anyone or even causing any property damage.

Upon hearing Justice Butterfield’s remarks, Press Officer Camille Hankins commented: “The real terrorists are the ones that are torturing and killing animals at places like Huntingdon Life Sciences. Justice Butterfield must not have seen the videotape of the atrocities committed at Huntingdon Life Sciences, which included a beagle puppy being punched in the face and a monkey being cut open alive.”

Despite the imprisonment of some of the defendants for over 18 months as they awaited trial, SHAC has continued to plague Huntingdon Life Sciences. According to a recent financial statement, with outstanding debt of $75 million and a plummeting share price, Huntingdon Life Sciences recently announced that they were downsizing their company and planning a move back to England in hopes of securing additional financing to keep them afloat.

In November 2008, HLS reported having lost two key contracts, resulting in an immediate and steep drop in share price. Huntingdon Life Sciences, trading under the name Life Sciences Research (ticker symbol LSR on the NYSE ARCA Exchange) had previously reached a high of $39.30 per share. After a steady and rapid decline, on January 27, 2009, they traded at a low of $6.73, their lowest share price in several years. Hankins speculated: “In light of the current economy and the ramping up of the global campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences, it would not surprise me if they filed for bankruptcy in the very near future.”

News of the sentences elicited an immediate response from the global network of activists working on the campaign. Solidarity actions and demonstrations are being staged throughout the United Kingdom and around the world. In Moscow, sixty activists protested at the Moscow office of AstraZeneca, one of Huntingdon Life Sciences most important clients. In New York City, the group Win Animal Rights held 3 days of solidarity protests at the homes of investors and customers of Huntingdon Life Sciences. One protest was held at the Central Park West home of Andrew Baker, CEO and Chairman of HLS and another at the home of Robert Kelly, CEO and Chairman of Bank of New York Mellon, one of HLS’ largest investors.

“This latest sentencing is a wake up call. Those who suffer the brunt of the state’s repression are those who maintain a high profile in the movement, not those who are clandestinely going about the business of animal liberation….” commented Press Officer and physician Dr. Jerry Vlasak “…The message is clear. Stay safe, stay free and stay anonymous and you can continue to fight for animal liberation by destroying those who exploit, torture and murder innocent animals.”

Neither activists nor the system as a whole can accept defeat on behalf of the HLS campaign, so it has become a strategic point of engagement affecting all animal activists. If a retreat is staged, all targets of protest will know activists can be waited out or crushed; yet if HLS goes bankrupt, every bloodthirsty multinational corporation on Earth will know people have the strength, the tools, and the strategy to make them next in line for bankruptcy. This means the “Battle of HLS” has become a meeting engagement, and neither activists nor the animals they defend can afford to lose this fight, no matter what the cost.

new HLS customer: wells fargo

Every single day 500 animals are tortured to death inside Huntingdon life Sciences one of the worlds most well known and un-respected animal testing facilities. After 6 undercover investigations the horror goes on with in their walls with continued government protection and multiple bailouts. In 2008 we watched as another round of activists were wrongfully imprisoned for doing what was morally appropriate and completely legal. After 2008 they are still 100 million in the whole even after they sold off all of their property in 2007 to their own ceo only to rent it back. What did change for them in 2008 was a climbing financial bubble of their stock price to $40. a share! But like every bubble destined to pop this one did as in a couple short weeks their value dropped 75% down to $10 a share. While a massive success for the animals it still is $10 to high for the 70,000 animals in HLS right now.

Most activists know of some of the undercover footage for inside HLS that was even shown in the documentary “Earthlings” where a 6 month old beagle puppy was repetitively punched in the face and a primate monkey had it’s ribcage cracked and cut open while fully conscious. From one undercover investigation to another they all told the same story and that none of the instances were isolated and were actually a regular routine for HLS.

This is a company that is so bad that one of it’s own employees attempted suicide after working in this hell hole for less then a few months. A few months after that and leaving HLS for good she reached out to talk to SHAC (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty) a group that grown to more of an idea and a global movement to shut down HLS then anything else. Since then, last year, all of the founders to SHAC were imprisoned as well as some of their regular activist. But again, it didn’t stop. Just like the down fall of the SHAC7 here in USA others stepped up because the realized that when animal are in labs and under attack, What do we do? We act up and fight back! Right now with the heads of both SHAC USA and SHAC UK in jail, there are people doing demos in 22 countries around the world.

Historically the LA area has been on the dry side for HLS demo targets compared to some other cities, but every once and awhile a company as foolish as WellsFargo decides to own shares in the cruelest animal testing facility around.

It’s their blood money, it’s their fault!
Shame on WellsFargo. Did they think they could slip by with as much exposure as they have in LA with this many compassionate activists?

Huntingdon’s stock shares are known on the exchange as “LSR” in short for “Life Sciences Research” which is Huntingdon Life Sciences. Do not confuse this and always make it clear that LSR is the stock symbol not HLS. On the exchange “HLS” is a completely different company all together.

peru zoo liberation

“PUBLIC COMMUNIQUE

Lima, November 21, 2008.

Individuals for Animal Liberation.

To the civilian community, visual and written press, environmental groups and collectives and individuals that fight for the abolition of Animal, Human and Earth exploitation, we declare the following:
• On Friday, November 21 of this year, in the early morning hours, we carried out a direct action and rescue for Animal Liberation in the Parque Zoológico Huachipa, located in the city of Lima at Km. 9.5 on the central highway in Peru.
• Our actions were directed at smashing animal exploitation, our efforts focused on the direct action of releasing animals and returning them to their natural habitat.
• We consider it necessary to explain what our action consisted of, due to the blockage of information by the Zoo and the news media that have focused all their attention on the APEC meeting in Lima. We entered between Thursday night and the early hours of Friday morning. We cut and opened more than thirty cages
for birds of different species, managing to free more than 50 birds, including Toucans, Owls and other tropical birds and indigenous species of Peru. We also climbed to the top of the mega cage for birds that has been an animal prison, sabotaging its structure with the hope that birds such as parrots, macaws, pigeons, doves, toucans, and white herons locked up in this mega-aviary could find an exit from this life of imprisonment and fly free. Afterwards we were prepared for the most important part of the action, to carry two jungle cats, ocelots, in cages specially suited to them, and to transfer them to their natural habitat; these animals were transported and later released into wild space, the ecosystem of the low jungle of Peru, in order to give them the possibility of a free life far from the harassing looks of tourists, consumers of animal exploitation.
• We believe it necessary to mention and to denounce animal traffickers and zoos and other responsible parties acting as accomplices of state institutions, acquiring animals from the hands of vile traffickers that find no better business than to imprison these free beings in small spaces like those of the animals we freed. These animals were in small cages, groups of up to eight birds per cage, without the ability to fly or interact freely, they were found with clear symptoms of stress caused by the overcrowding, proximity to their natural predators and lack of sunlight. Many of the animals that we freed were found in an area that was off-limits to visitors of the zoo, that was not even on the map of the park, imprisoned in tents, without sunlight and without sufficient space needed to spread out naturally.
• We denounce as well the imprisonment of rodents, turtles, birds and other small animals in plastic containers with the purpose of serving as food for other species; those we found spinning in circles, typical behavior of animals with nervous disorders caused by confinement, the vast majority waiting for utilization later, demonstrating the falsehood and double talk of the companies that work as alleged institutions of preservation and species conservation, who are truly companies of animal exploitation, always operating with speciesist disregard for the interests of the individuals of other species.
• We also denounce the conditions in which the felines that we released were found; they were located in cages of no more than two square meters, side by side, preventing their free exercise of interests and abilities, destroying their instincts and subjecting their wild nature to the egotistic interests of executives who disguise their business of exploitation as conservation. A claim that we denounce as false, due to the conditions of which we were witnesses to when entering this mega animal prison, where animals supposedly in recuperation were kept locked up for display later as objects of entertainment.
• We want to make a call to all collectives and individuals who struggle and are active for Animal, Human and Earth Liberation to act directly towards achieving total liberation, taking into account the interests of those captured under the exploitative hands of owners of zoos, bullfights, animal breeders, the fur industry, meat industry, circuses with animals and an endless number of places of animal exploitation and death; take the necessary security measures, to ensure safe liberations as much for activists as for people not responsible for this imprisonment, like the wage earners in these capitalist companies, also victims of exploitation.
• We want to emphasize as well that liberation through direct action is something we can all be a part of, we do not need special training nor to be part of any organization, just to act with a couple of tools and an attitude open to taking risks in pursuit of the elimination of speciesism and Animal, Human and Earth exploitation, being always clear that race, sex, color, level of intelligence, language, sexual orientation, or in this case species, are not indicators of superiority or inferiority, but individual characteristics. Individuals are deserving of respect on the basis of their own desires and interests, advancing our ethics to a true unfolding of solidarity and egalitarianism.

For Animal, Human and Earth Liberation.

oasis sanctuary needs help!

OASIS SANCTUARY UPDATE

Dear Friends of animals and all compassionate people:

Further to our open letter to the public we are sad to report that Oasis
Sanctuary did not raise the required funding to pay back property taxes
and stave off property auction. At this point we are in urgent need of all
good people to help place the remaining animals before Sullivan County
claims Oasis properties in mid-January.

Over the past few months we have managed to place 85% of our rescues in
other no-kill sanctuaries as well as to individual forever homes.

The remaining animals are not easy to place:

DOGS:
3 fear biters
6 pissers and poopers
1 elderly blind diabetic pit bull
1 hip dysplasia German shepherd
1 incontinent Belgian Shepherd
3 dogs that are sweet with people but not with animals
1 arthritic toothless pitty and
1 beautiful Aussie shepherd who does not like strangers but gets over it
after you give him a biscuit .

CATS:
4 FIV+ cats (2 very shy, 1 fear biter, and one super sweet character who
is deaf and blind in one eye)
Approx 10 shy and 5 semi ferals

All these wonderful critters have issues that are not insurmountable with
some dedicated time and love.

While we appreciate your suggestions, and have taken many of them in the
past, Oasis is at a point where nothing short of a miracle or major cash
infusion can save it. At this stage we are first and foremost asking
like-minded shelters and individuals to help us place each and every
remaining animal.

Secondly, we are requesting donations to pay for interim care of the
critters until we find them homes.

If you or anyone you know can help us find immediate placement for these
animals, we ask that you PLEASE HELP THE OASIS ANIMALS NOW.
Sincerely
For the critters

certain to see you through
