Minneapolis Activist Indicted Under AETA

Friday, November 20th, 2009

db4eb88a-d3e8-11de-b1d1-001cc4c03286.preview-300 Scott DeMuth, the Minneapolis activist that recently resisted the grand jury in    Davenport, Iowa has been indicted for conspiracy to violate the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. His contempt of court charge for refusing to testify in front of the  secret grand jury, has recently been dismissed due to this new criminal charge. This  indictment is in relation to the 2004 Animal Liberation Front raid at the University of  Iowa; yet the indictment mentions nothing about the actual University raid.

You can stay updated by staying tuned to their support site. Last, but certainly not least.  PLEASE write to Scott and Carrie! They need to know that they have support on the  outside. Thank them for resisting the grand jury, thank them for being strong when the  pressure is on. I’m sure they would love to know how much of an inspiration they are to  other activists around the world.

For a better read and more interesting story, check out Will Potter’s blog about the case.

Federal grand jury protest

Both Carrie and Scott were taken into custody today after their hearing at 9 am. Both activists have resisted the grand jury in Davenport, Iowa by pleading their 5th Amendment right and not speaking with the court. They believe they have been called in for questioning to try and get information about a 2004 A.L.F action against a lab that happened at the University of Iowa in which rats and mice were freed from captivity and torture, lab equipment was destroyed, and causing the University around $450,000 in damage.

Hopefully Carrie and Scott will be out soon, if not, we will have some addresses where you can write to them to give them your words of support.

India ban elephants from zoos and circuses

Monday, November 16th, 2009

75663-main_FullSan Rafael, Calif. (November 12, 2009)–In Defense of Animals (IDA) today hailed the recent ruling by India’s Central Zoo Authority (CZA) to completely ban the keeping of elephants in zoos, circuses and private collections throughout the country and ordering of the release of 140 such elephants, who will be “rehabilitated” to live in semi-free ranging conditions in forest camps and facilities near national parks, and other protected wildlife reserves.

If a country such as India, which has thousands of years’ experience managing elephants in captivity, can make such a forward-thinking decision, then certainly the United States can take a stand against circuses that exploit elephants and sub-optimal zoo exhibits that cause elephants to suffer and die prematurely,” he continued.

Second person subpoenaed to grand jury in Davenport

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

DeMuth plans to remain silent Tuesday in front of the grand jury, he said. DeMuth is not allowed to have an attorney present during the proceedings, and no judge is presides either, something DeMuth believes is a violation of basic rights. “I do not want to legitimize or empower this proceeding with my cooperation,” he said.

“I will exercise my legal right, and my personal obligation, to remain silent. No punishment could be more severe than surrendering my personal values. So I am willing to accept whatever consequences may come of that decision,” DeMuth said.

Leather company sabotaged ( CHILE )

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

taken from DirectAction.info

A large moon guarded our backs, while with pieces of metal and glue we sealed all the access doors; there were four. Also, with a lot of red paint, symbolizing the blood that the leather industry spills, we stained their massive walls and CueroBat signs. Finally, we made it clear that this action was not an artistic expression, but sabotage against human domination of other species (speciesism); with spray-paint we wrote in large letters, ‘LEATHER = MURDER,’ along with an A in a circle with an F and an L in its center, symbol of the FLA.
