Dr. Steven Best: Moral Evolution & Animal Rights

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Dr. Steven Best is one of my favorite speakers within the animal liberation movement. Philosopher, writer, and activist, Steven Best definitely has his hands full and is also a press officer for North American Animal Liberation Press Office.

Ohio Dairy Farm Brutality

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Chilling undercover footage recorded during a new Mercy For Animals investigation exposes dairy farm workers sadistically abusing cows and young calves.

Captured on hidden camera, the shocking scenes of abuse reveal a culture of cruelty at Conklin Dairy Farms in Plain City, Ohio.

During a four-week investigation between April and May, MFA’s investigator documented farm workers:

* Violently punching young calves in the face, body slamming them to the ground, and pulling and throwing them by their ears

* Routinely using pitchforks to stab cows in the face, legs and stomach

* Kicking “downed” cows (those too injured to stand) in the face and neck – abuse carried out and encouraged by the farm’s owner

* Maliciously beating restrained cows in the face with crowbars – some attacks involving over 40 blows to the head

* Twisting cows’ tails until the bones snapped

* Punching cows’ udders

* Bragging about stabbing, dragging, shooting, breaking bones, and beating cows and calves to death

Check out MERCY FOR ANIMALS for more information on the footage!

Sober Slave

“When a slave was drunk, the slaveholder had no fear that he would plan an insurrection…. It was the sober, thinking slave who was dangerous, and needed the vigilance of his master to keep him a slave.” -Frederick Douglas

I stumbled upon this Frederick Douglas quote yesterday and knew it was too good not to share with you all. This quote is a personal one for me, being that I have been straight edge for 12 years and wanting to be a sober thinking / acting individual being one of the many reasons of being straight edge.

Out of all the punks I grew up with pre high school and all the way through high school, I was the only straight edge one. I have witnessed how alcohol and drugs can pacify people. I have seen friends care about certain issues enough to counter and organize against them, and then slowly..not care. Drink after drink, party after party, bong hit after bong hit, their activist drive disappears. Even when I showed them what was happening to them, they couldn’t ( or didn’t want to ) realize it. It’s really interesting to know that these situations have been going on since the african slave trade. Please don’t let this happen to you or your community.

This blog wasn’t intended to cram straight edge down your throat, i promise. My main goal for this post was just to make you think. Do you agree that alcohol and drugs can pacify an individual?  Do you agree that you need a sober head and body to actively stand up and fight injustice when you see it?

Let me know your thoughts

13 Rabbits Rescued ( Mexico )

“‘The night and its magic will take care of us, her depth submerges us and it is there that we operate and make the magic flow’ – Icarus.

Chance, friendship, but above all conviction led us to another act of solidarity with the animals in the early morning of May 4.

The hour was getting late by the time we acted. In total 13 rabbits were rescued from a farm where their skins were used to make ridiculous bags and hats.

For some of us it was the first liberation of our lives, for many it will not be the last. You get to feel a great empathy and a gentle tingling in your stomach when the animals look in your eyes. You feel really good.

Several hours were spent searching for the ideal place for the farewell, but it was worth it to see them running around and enjoying nature, feeling the earth under their feet when only days before they were in tiny cages waiting to be killed. You feel like a part of you is going to be freed with them, and that part of you will be lost in the immensity of the forest.

Then you will finally know what we are talking about. You can do it any day, any night, this action happened with a half moon lighting up the paths for them to escape … Animal liberation is much more than reformist words or tears, animal liberation is direct and targeted acts in support of the freedom of animals, and an economic and psychological blow to those who torture and murder them in favor of vanity and consumerism.

The animals do not need your pity; they need your solidarity!

We want to thank the comrades who collaborated in this action directly and indirectly.

And we want to dedicate it especially to our comrades Diego Alonso and Adrian Magdaleno. The first is held hostage in a psychiatric hospital/extermination center and the second in Mexico City’s Reclusorio Norte prison/extermination center.

WE WILL NOT FORGET THEM!

FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF ALL CAGES!

THERE IS NO JUSTICE … ONLY US!

This is regarding V.A.D.L’s campaign against Snowflake Furs.

n1290183274_180751_3008

“After 17 years of leasing space in the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, Westmont Hospitality Group will not be renewing Snowflake’s lease this September forcing them to look for another location.

We got confirmation today from Snowflake themselves that they are in the process of trying to find another spot downtown to lease, although they admit they are not sure whether they are going to be staying downtown, or even in Vancouver at all. They asked for any of their supporters to please phone the hotel asking them to reconsider (YA RIGHT!!)

At this point we will be keeping an extremely close watch on Snowflake and the second we find out where they plan on going we will be sure to let any potential landlord know that we are a package deal, where they go we go.

This week we will be gearing up to direct our campaign against the other 2 Snowflake stores in the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and the Fairmont Banff Springs.

WE WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THE FAIRMONT HAS EVICTED ALL 3 STORES.

As of right now we are halting the campaign against the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. We made an agreement with them that the second Westmont Hospitalities decides to cancel their lease we will halt all actions against the Hotel Vancouver location.

Please send a thank you email to the landlords at Westmont Hospitality Group and the Fairmont CEO William Fatt. Please also remind William Fatt of the Fairmont that Snowflake needs to be removed from the other 2 locations.

VADL would like to thank all those who have been involved with the campaign, although there were only a few of us who stuck with it to the end, WE DID IT! Thank you for your support! And to all those people who took part in this campaign even for a short period of time, your actions are a part of this victory!

We will keep everyone updated!
