A dictionary definition if the word vanity reads, lack of real value; hollowness; worthlessness.? By definition the fur industry is an industry of vanity. It is impossible to argue for the necessity of a fur coat and it is impossible to argue for the choice to wear fur outside of selfishness and vanity.

About 15% of the animals who are murdered for this vanity are caught in the wild through trapping. Bone crushing leg hold traps are the tool of choice. An animal caught in the excruciating pain of one of these traps faces the potential of starvation, indefensible attack from other predators, freezing to death, and in some cases an all consuming panic that causes the animal to actually chew its own leg off. To survive a leg hold trap only promises a brutal neck breaking by the hands of the person behind the trap. The fur trapping industry has also coined the phrase ?trash animals.? This is in reference to the hundreds of thousands of animals who are caught in the leg hold traps but whose fur cannot be used in vain for worthless fashion. After suffering through the experience that a leg hold trap offers these animals are simply killed and then thrown away.

The other 85% of the animals murdered for the unimpressive fashion statement of wearing fur are raised on fur farms, the likes of which have been banned in the UK. Beaver (9), rabbit (36), fox (18), mink (55), chinchilla (100), and raccoon (27) are among the animals who suffer on these farms. The numbers in parenthesis denote how many of a particular animal have to die in order to make just one fur coat. With little or no regulations governing living conditions and killing methods the treatment of the animals on these farms is in no way humane. These beautiful animals are forced into cruelly undersized cages, are underfed, and are often times lacking water. For the animals who survive into maturity the future only offers a painful death. Auto exhaust suffocation, neck breaking, injections of acetone and other poisons are among the choices in the arsenal of a bloodthirsty fur farmer. Another favorite killing method is electrocution. In order to protect the ?value? of the animal?s fur the electrocution is often times delivered orally, through the genitals, or through the anus.

Wearing fur is a needless, disgusting, selfish act of violence.
